DJ ALDRIN

Voted Local DJ Who Gets You Onto The Dancefloor: Who else but one of Singapore’s prominent spinmeister Aldrin to clinch this award. He really does get us on the dancefloor to shake our bons bons till the lights come on. Just go to one of his ONE nights and see for yourself. He’s the man and you, our readers are spot on.

[The X-Faxtor: I-S Readers’ Choice Awards, Sept 2008]

One of Asia's biggest DJ export to date, Aldrin has been championing his genre-bending sounds through his signature ONE nights at Zouk in Singapore, and guest spots all over the globe, including Pacha, Space & DC10 in Ibiza, Turnmills and The Cross in London, Cielo in New York, Womb in Tokyo, and Home in Sydney. In the studio, his releases have received support from big guns like John Digweed, Carl Cox, Hernan Cattaneo, Dave Seaman and Tom Stephan. His remix of "Love In New Wave" by Singapore rock band Electrico received massive airplay by Pete Tong on his BBC Radio One show.

2008 sees Aldrin launching his very own digital imprint ONE WITH MUSIC, where he will continue to showcase his musical output. The label also aims to be a platform for the many talents in and around Asia! This, coupled with his Essential Mix set making him the only South East Asian to be on Pete's show, plus Danny Tenaglia And Marco Bailey both singling him out in the DJ Mag Top 100 Poll as a DJ to watch, Aldrin is clearly an international DJ/producer that Asia can call their very own.

DJB

Pinning down Zouk's house stalwart DJB's style is as easy as finding pearls in oysters. Buth one thing you'll find for sure is his innate ability to build a scorcher of a set whit his arsenal of exhilarating and sweat-inducing gems. Always one to push the house sound to a whole new level, it's no wonder he's been cited by Martin Solveig & DJ Gregory as the best house DJ in Asia at the Junction Bali press conference 2005. DJ JEREMY BOON

Back in 1987, at the tender age of 17, Jeremy first stepped into the world of DJ-ing at Singapore Hyatt Hotels, Chinoiserie where the posh and classy found themselves residing.

Jeremy was already pushing the boundaries of house music at that time. This served as a platform for him to develop his love and passion for the house music he currently plays today. In 1991 when Zouk opened, Jeremy kicked off his career in the Zouk Mainroom. Jeremys early years were spent breaking new boundaries of dance music to the locals, where alongside DJ Alfredo, he started to introduce the Ibiza Balearic sounds into Singapore.

This has kick-started what has since been the sounds that define Zouk and what it represents. With his versatility, he played alongside DJs of different genres like Paul Oakenfold, Sasha, Jeremy Healy, Roger S,, Derrick May, Frankie Knuckles and many other top djs from around the world. Zouk´s pioneer resident DJ has seen him mutate with the club through the different music phases that the club has experienced. With the subsequent opening of Velvet Underground, Jeremy was tasked to take residency as its first resident DJ. Attracting the similar feel of plush and class, Jeremy found his place in Velvet Underground, spinning with the likes of Louie Vega, Joe Claussell, Danny Krivit, Phil Asher Norman Jay and Reel People. Jeremy has since developed a signature Velvet sound - an eclectic mix of House music fused with afro, latin, jazz, funk and soul.

Apart from that, Jeremy has also garnered a following for his genre-defying soundtrack via his Nu Beats night up in the Phuture room, again, championing an alternative sound with the likes of Gilles Peterson, Rainer Truby, Jazzy Jeff, Seiji, Jazzanova and KJM. With his vast knowledge and experience, Jeremy Boon is the first club dj in Singapore to obtained a weekly local radio show on LUSH99.5, a new ground breaking radio station, where he takes Singapores music scene to greater heights combining an eclectic selection of soul, jazz, latin, house, hip hop and funk.

He has further gone to work on mixes for J-Wave Radio Japan and has hence created a demand for himself in Japan. Jeremy has also compiled and mixed CD2 of Zouk’s first double CD compilation entitled Rhythm1, which received rave reviews in DJ Magazine (5 star rating, November 03); and IDJ Magazine (4 star rating, January 04). DJ Jeremy Boon has truly reflected a passion and life for his music that he has translated in all perfection to the sounds he plays. A recent 4th August New Paper interview also shed light on Jeremys passion for what he does and is a testimony to what he has achieved thus far.

From spinning to radio shows and creating remixes for celebrities namely Sheikh Haikel and Sandy Lam, opening dj sets for concert by Incognito, Grace Jones, Inner City, 808 State, Jesus Loves You, Tortured Soul, Reel People and Kenny Bobien. Jeremy has also compiled and mixed CD2 of Zouk’s first double CD compilation entitled Rhythm1, which received rave reviews in DJ Magazine (5 star rating, November 03); and IDJ Magazine (4 star rating, January 04).

ANDREW CHOW ZOUK

A pioneer in the introduction of the non four-to-the-floor rhythms to the local audience, Andrew has been the key resident DJ since Phuture opened it´s doors in December ´96. Brought up on a diet of old school Hip Hop, R & B, funk and soul, it is in Phuture that Andrew showcases his diverse taste, dropping everything from the slower hip hop grooves to more uptempo Big Beat and Funky Breaks.

Now anchoring his own Friday nights at Phuture, he admits that it´s a tough job keeping the crowd interested. "You´ll always see a new generation of clubbers every year". So it is with this ever-changing taste of punters that his set has also evolved, experimenting with new styles, even introducing the "dirty side of House music".

A true blue turntablist, he is also quick to highlight his tricks on the decks, fusing elaborate scratching and swift transformations into the mix. Yet he maintains a secret love for the mellower, trip hop and chilled out down tempo beats, which he passionately lays down every Saturday night at the Wine Bar.

TONY TAY

Having joined Zouk at the end of 1996, Tony Tay firmly found his place in Phuture, churning out dance music the other side of the 4/4 norm. Regarded as the Ambassador of Breaks in Asia by many of the heavyweights in the U.K, Tony stays adamant and dedicated to pushing the boundaries with his residency nights, “Sirens”. He has also been credited in the album releases of Hybrid, Tayo, Hyper, Ali B and Evil Nine for his contribution in spreading the breakbeat gospel.

Launched in 1999, Sirens is synonymous with the sonic realms of Breaks, Beats and Beyond. It was originally a series of parties thrown on a whim. Most notably, the longest-standing breaks night in Asia, it has now amassed a following of its own when it brought out local talents as well as showcased international artists like, Adam Freeland, Evil Nine, Future Funk Squad, General Midi, Hybrid, Hyper, Koma & Bones, Meat Katie and Tayo just to name but a few.

Since the end of 2005, Sirens has become a monthly event. In 2006, having found a new home in Zouk's Main Room, Sirens continues to break new ground; playing a cross section of Phat, Rockish, Driving and Tech Funk sounds, along with a broad spectrum of cutting edge Electronic dance music. “Sirens” has also gone a notch higher to give the local clubbing massive, an enhanced party experience with the accompaniment of live visuals to Tony’s electrifying soundscapes.

Tony has produced several tracks of his own which have been aired on Angus Robinson’s Proton Radio show on Money Shot Radio, Peter Paul’s show on ibreaks Radio and on DJ Icey - Automatic Static Radio Show (BoomBox Channel 34) which broadcasts on Sirius Satellite that covers all of North America and Hawaii.

2008 sees Tony breaking new ground by focusing on a more House-inspired sound that’s not only big on melodies but bass-lines as well. Spaciously mood altering and groovy with driving percussion, his Techy / Housey sets have constantly kept temperatures and fists rising whenever he helms the decks on his WEEK’N and TAB residencies respectively. On the production front, other than his breaks releases, Tony has been busying himself in the studio producing his four to the floor sound that’s bound for dance floor notoriety as well.

Tony's diverse and forward thinking attitude towards his mission bears testimony to why he is instrumental in the development of electronic music in this part of the world. Keep your eyes and ears peeled.

BRENDON P ZOUK

No rookie to the local clubbing scene, Brendon´s DJ career spans two decades. A trip to Paradise Garage back in ´84 weaned him into the New York club culture, and into the music that was to become the house music that we hear today. Crossing vast musical backgrounds over his years as a DJ, he continued to acquire a keen ear and passion for dance music. "There´s just so much to share with dance music, as it combines all the key elements of music; the funk, soul and jazz that I grew up with, plus today´s technology".

Besides his previous residencies in other local clubs, he has also taken his sets to other clubs around the globe. Forays into production have also bore fruit with his contributions to the soundtrack of the locally produced motion picture - A Sharp Pencil. And as the latest resident in the Zouk main room, Brendon will no doubt feature his eclectic and experimental approach to dance music.
